fire sprinkler systems

One of the most life and property saving systems used within the fire protection industry is a fire sprinkler system.

A fire sprinkler system is an active fire protection device, meaning that when the temperature reaches a certain level the fire sprinkler system will automatically activate, dousing the area with a continuous supply of water until the system is shut off. A common myth is that when a fire sprinkler system is activated the whole system will be active. Sadly, Hollywood has always tried to make movies more dramatic and perpetuated this myth! In reality, clever engineers have designed fire sprinkler systems to create as little damage as possible and only the sprinkler head activated will supply water.

How Fire Sprinkler Systems work

A fire sprinkler system works by being triggered by the extreme heat being created by a fire. This system consists of a number of sprinkler heads, each with a glass bulb connected to piping, which in turn depending on the size of the building, may be connected to a diesel and electric pump or may be directly plumbed into the main water supply. Some high rise buildings not only have pumps to boost the pressure of the water supply but also have large water storage tanks which at any time can hold over 100,000 litres of water.

The Australian Standards state that a fire sprinkler system is an integral fire safety measure and if you building contains a fire sprinkler system then the following service intervals apply:

  • Weekly -Depending on the original DA submitted to the local council when the building was constructed.
  • Monthly
  • 6 Monthly
  • Annual

Testing and maintenance of the fire sprinkler system is of an extremely high priority and is used to help compile your Annual Fire Safety Statement.
