Fire hydrant systems are high pressure water pumps designed to deliver mains pressure water from the primary water supply directly to a building for the use of the fire brigade and suitable qualified personnel in the event of an outbreak of fire.

A fire hydrant is an active fire protection device that acts as a connection point for fire fighters to connect their fire hose to in order to combat a fire. Fire hydrants are not a new device and were first invented by Sir Frederick Graff in 1801.

Fire Hydrant and Pump Sets Installation

Fire hydrants are strategically located either within the building, or externally around the building giving fire fighters a greater chance to control and extinguish the fire.

Fire hydrants may either be connected directly to the mains water supply or in larger sites will be connected to a diesel pump set giving greater water supply and pressure to the fire brigade. These devices boost the pressure when that of the mains is not enough.

All fire hydrant systems must be installed and serviced according to the Australian Standard AS2419 and must comprise of the following:

  • Fire Brigade Booster
  • Water Supply
  • Pipe work and Valves
  • Pump set (depending on the size of the building)
  • Hydrant Valves or Landing Valves
  • Block Plan

Fire hydrants must also be testing and inspected on the following intervals according to the Australian Standards and are required to be to compile the Annual Fire Safety Statement:

  • Monthly (If connected to a diesel or electric pump set)
  • 6 Monthly
  • Annual

Fire Safe carry an extensive range of parts and suppliers for regular servicing requirements and repairs as well as providing regular inspection, testing and maintenance services to ensure these vital systems are ready for operation in an emergency situation.

Electrical and diesel powered pump sets must be checked and maintained properly on a monthly basis to ensure that they start on demand. Preventative maintenance on pumps is critical and saves large repair/replacement costs when poorly maintained pump sets fail.
